Keven Schlotterbeck appears to be heading for a move abroad, with FC Southampton reportedly close to sealing a deal worth €3.85 million plus up to €650,000 in bonuses. For FC Augsburg, it would mean losing a defender who only recently reclaimed a more prominent role, but also one whose future has looked increasingly open over the last few weeks.
The timing is notable. On Saturday, Schlotterbeck captained Augsburg in their 2-0 cup win at Energie Cottbus, yet by Wednesday he was expected on the island. It is a swift shift in circumstances for the 29-year-old, who had already been the subject of talk in the summer after considering a move and attracting interest, including from VfL Wolfsburg.
Why the move now looks likely
Schlotterbeck had not been a guaranteed starter for long. In the final phase of the previous season, he lost his regular place in Augsburg's central defense, which left open the question of whether he would stay and fight or look for a new challenge. His own comments suggested he was still prepared to compete for his spot, but also aware that nothing would come easily.
