The James Scanlon Arsenal transfer has reached the point where the guesswork is starting to give way to reality. The 19-year-old has undergone his medical ahead of completing a move to Arsenal, and that is usually the stage at which a deal stops feeling theoretical and starts looking inevitable.
And for Manchester United, there is an uncomfortable edge to this one. Scanlon has been at Old Trafford since 2021, but the clubs are now expected to finalise the deal within the next 48 hours, with a 40% sell-on clause understood to be part of the agreement. In other words, United are not just losing a young player who has attracted interest across Europe — they are also handing Arsenal a cleaner entry point into the next phase of his career.
Why Arsenal moved now
This is not a random punt. Arsenal have targeted Scanlon as part of an academy recruitment drive, and there is logic to that. He is already a 24-times capped senior international for Gibraltar, which is not the kind of experience you casually ignore when judging a teenager. It has helped bring interest from across Europe, particularly in Spain, and that level of senior exposure gives a young player a very different profile from the average academy move.
There is also a familiar footballing thread here. Arsenal's new Under-21 head coach David Horseman previously worked with Scanlon at Manchester United, which adds a layer of familiarity to the move. Clubs do not always need a backstory to sign a player, but in youth recruitment it helps when someone in the room already knows what the player can and cannot do.
That does not guarantee anything, of course. A medical does not equal a first-team breakthrough, and it would be reckless to pretend this kind of move comes with certainty attached. The more realistic reading is that Arsenal are strengthening their pathway, adding a player with international experience and room to develop, then deciding later where the best fit lies.
What United are really losing
The awkward part for Manchester United is that this is not merely a case of a youngster moving on. Scanlon had been in their system since 2021, and at one stage Sevilla were keen to sign him permanently in January. He was then sent on loan to Swindon for the second half of the campaign, which tells you enough about where he stood in the immediate picture. Now he is heading elsewhere altogether.
The 40% sell-on clause is the detail that makes the exit more interesting than most. It is a sign that United have at least protected some future value, but it also underlines the reality: they are not controlling the next step in the player’s career. Arsenal are.
That is the point of these deals. Not every academy exit is a disaster, and not every young player who leaves becomes a regret. But when a club loses a 19-year-old who has already built a senior international profile, the question is no longer just whether he leaves. It is whether he leaves before the original club has properly decided what he could become.
Scanlon has done the medical. The deal is nearly there. And if Arsenal complete it as expected, this will be remembered less as a speculative move and more as another example of how quickly the market can reward clubs that move early, know their target, and leave somebody else to wonder what exactly they have just let go.
