Campbell Hall has reached a confidential settlement with Hayley Dylan in Los Angeles Superior Court, a significant development just before Byron Scott’s civil trial was set to begin Sept. 8 in Van Nuys.
The settlement means the prestigious Studio City private school will no longer be fighting the case at trial, even though it had previously sought to remove itself from the litigation. The school remained in the case after Judge Lee S. Arian denied its motion for summary judgment in January.
What the case is about
The lawsuit centers on allegations that Scott sexually assaulted a 15-year-old Campbell Hall student in 1987 during the filming of an instructional basketball video at the school. The complaint was filed Dec. 30, 2022, under Governor Newsom’s Child Victims Act, which created a temporary three-year filing window for claims that had previously been time-barred.
That timing matters because the case involves an old allegation brought long after the events at issue, but within a narrow legal window that allowed the claim to move forward. The school’s settlement before trial adds another layer to a case that has already moved through a key pretrial ruling and is now headed toward a civil trial focused on Scott.
Where Scott stands
Scott, a former Lakers star, remains the defendant in the case. Linda Bauermeister said in a statement to The Times in 2025 that, “Our client is devastated by this complaint, a basketball event that took place in 1987. Our client believed the plaintiff to be over 18 and had no idea she would claim otherwise.”
For now, the most immediate change is Campbell Hall’s exit from active litigation through a confidential deal. The broader question of Scott’s alleged conduct, and what a jury may make of it, is still set to be addressed when the civil trial begins in Van Nuys.
