Joe Tate was due to marry Dawn Fletcher, but the day had already spun apart before the car hit. Joe drank heavily and trashed his own wedding marquee after realising how far Caleb Miligan’s revenge plan had gone, then Dawn ran in and pleaded with him. That put the wedding back into the centre of the episode instead of letting it drift into a routine soap breakup.
Dawn had been planning to jilt him at the altar and start a new life abroad with Billy and their children. She believed Joe was responsible for brutally attacking Billy, which made every move in the run-up to the wedding feel like a trap rather than a ceremony.

On the wedding day, Graham Foster caught Dawn packing her suitcases. She knocked him out and tied him up in the stable, a sharp turn that showed how far the cover-up had gone before the crash even entered the frame. Joe had also been moved by Caleb Miligan and Ruby, who were helping Dawn and Billy as revenge against him, before he rushed off to confront Dawn. Caleb later abandoned his revenge plan after hearing Joe toasting “new beginnings” in the Woolpack, a brief pause that made the later wreckage hit harder when Jimmy’s car came crashing into the marquee.
Jimmy had been planning a vow renewal with Nicola King while hiding huge debt from her for weeks, so his own story was already cracking in the background.
