Last season, Bielik made 17 Championship appearances for West Brom, a club that finished 21st and only narrowly avoided relegation to League One. That does not make him the answer to every problem under the sun, but it does underline a simple point: he has been operating in the same rough Championship traffic Cardiff are trying to survive in.
And this is where the logic sharpens. When a squad is stripped so thin that there is no fit central defender available, the club does not get to be precious about style, resale value or long-term romanticism. It has to get a defender in the building who can help immediately. Bielik looks like that kind of signing.
