The Tampa Bay Rays are being backed as a small underdog against the Detroit Tigers in Wednesday’s series finale at Comerica Park, with Freddy Peralta set to take the ball at 1:10 p.m. ET. It is a matchup that has the feel of a tight betting game, but the Rays arrive with enough recent form and offensive edge to justify support.
The number attached to Tampa Bay is -113, and that reflects a game where neither pitching staff inspires full confidence. Peralta has his own recent FIP concerns, while Detroit’s side has been dealing with even clearer problems, especially in the bullpen. That combination is what makes the Rays an appealing side rather than a runaway favourite.
Why Tampa Bay have the edge
Over the last two weeks, the Rays have produced a 96 wRC+, which is not explosive but is solid enough for a team in a close matchup. By contrast, the Tigers’ lineup has managed only a 68 wRC+ over its previous six games, a worrying return when the pressure is on to close out a series at home.
The pitching numbers also point toward Tampa Bay being in a better position to control the game late. The Rays’ bullpen has posted a 3.38 xERA over the last week, while Detroit’s relief group has been far shakier over its last 23 frames, with a 5.65 FIP and 2.35 HR/9 allowed. In betting terms, that is a major difference.
Detroit’s bullpen is the concern
Quinn Allen summed up the key angle neatly, saying Detroit’s vulnerable bullpen gives Tampa Bay a clear opportunity to tack on some late runs at Comerica Park this afternoon.
That matters because close games often turn in the middle and late innings, not just in the first trip through the order. If Peralta can keep the game level or within reach, Tampa Bay have a strong chance of exploiting a Detroit staff that has been too easy to punish recently.
There are also signs that the Rays have been a reliable road play. They have cashed the moneyline in 14 of their last 21 road games, which supports the view that this is a team worth trusting away from home in the right spot.
With both starters carrying recent FIP concerns, the matchup is not about perfection. It is about which side is better equipped to handle volatility, and the answer here points toward Tampa Bay. In a game scheduled for 1:10 p.m. ET on Wednesday, August 26, the Rays look like the side with the cleaner path to finish the series strong.
