Jeff Probst unveils Survivor 51 cast before Sept. 23 debut

Jeff Probst has put Survivor 51 on the board with a 21-player cast revealed before the Sept. 23 premiere. That season opens the show’s Open Era, a format shift that changes how every castaway has to think about twists from the first day.

Jeff Probst and the Open Era

“Anything that’s ever happened on Survivor can happen again — at any time, in any order, without warning,” Probst said during the Survivor 50 finale. The line is the cleanest explanation yet of the Open Era: no twist, advantage or game mechanic is off limits.

The cast ranges in age from 24 to 49, and the mix includes a professional wrestler, voice actress, federal prosecutor, baseball executive and sociology professor. For a franchise that has spent 50 seasons teaching players to study past seasons, that is the new problem. The old playbook is still useful, but it no longer guarantees anything.

Aaliyah Puglia and the roster

Aaliyah Puglia, 24, is one of the revealed castaways. She is from Gloucester City, N.J., lives in Providence, R.I., and works as a chef. Alexis Levine, 34, is from and lives in Atlanta, Ga., and works as a criminal defense attorney.

An “Thien An” Nguyen, 24, is from and lives in Fort Worth, Texas, and is a medical student. Ana Sani, 34, is from Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada, lives in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and works as a voice actress. Angelica “Jelly” Loblack, 29, is from Garland, Texas, and Midwest City, Okla., lives in Bloomington, Ind., and is a sociology professor. Brady Booker, 27, is from La Salle, Ill., lives in Knoxville, Tenn., and is a pro wrestler.

For 50 seasons

For 50 seasons, Survivor players could study the game, but season 51’s cast has to prepare for anything. That changes the value of preparation itself: the smartest move is no longer learning one expected pattern, but building a game that can survive a return of something old without warning.

Sept. 23 is the date that matters now. Which full 21 castaways were included in the revealed Survivor 51 cast will be the first test of the Open Era once the season starts.
