Microsoft expands Xbox Physical Games with August 31st testing

Microsoft is adding a new Xbox physical games feature that lets owners of supported Xbox One and Xbox Series X discs claim a digital entitlement. Xbox Insiders get the first test on August 31st, with broader access to follow in the coming months.

Jason Ronald, the VP of next generation at Xbox, said: "Most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games support this new feature". He also said: "Players can claim a digital entitlement by inserting a supported disc into an Xbox One or Xbox Series X console and launching the game."

Ronald said the entitlement is tied to the specific disc. If that disc is swapped with a friend, or if someone signs in on a different Xbox profile and tries to play the disc-based game, the digital entitlement moves with the disc rather than staying on a different account.

That gives owners a route from a physical copy to a digital license without changing the game itself. Once the entitlement exists, Microsoft says the digital version can also be used on PC through Xbox Play Anywhere if supported, and streamed to multiple devices with Xbox Cloud Gaming if supported.

Microsoft and thousands of titles

Microsoft said publishers will control the feature, and that means not every title will be available at launch. Ronald said: "We’re starting with thousands of titles, and we’ll continue to add more over time". He added: "While not every title will be available at launch, this is an important step toward a future where players can have greater confidence that the games they buy remain with them for years to come."

The company said the work is part of game preservation and preparation for the next generation of Xbox consoles. Sony also has a separate plan for PlayStation games released after January 2028, which will be digital-only.

The immediate practical test for Xbox owners is simple: insert a supported disc into an Xbox One or Xbox Series X console, launch the game, and the digital entitlement should be created. The unanswered question is which specific titles make the first cut when the rollout expands beyond Xbox Insiders.
