Uefa's new Champions League rule will prevent Liverpool from hosting Real Madrid at Anfield for a third straight season if the two clubs are drawn against each other in Thursday's league phase draw for the 2026-27 Champions League. The same restriction also affects Inter Milan and Arsenal.
The change matters because Liverpool and Real Madrid have met at Anfield in each of the last two Champions League league phases. Liverpool won 2-0 in the 2024-25 season and 1-0 in the 2025-26 season, but that run cannot now be extended into a third consecutive season at the same venue.
What the new rule means
The league phase format, introduced at the start of the 2024-25 season, brings 36 teams into the competition and has each club face eight different opponents, with two from each of the four pots. The rule now being applied says the same home team cannot be repeated for three consecutive seasons. Uefa says that requirement comes from paragraph 16.03 of last season's regulations.
In practical terms, if Liverpool and Real Madrid are paired again, the fixture cannot be staged at Anfield for a third year in a row. That is the key change ahead of Thursday's draw, and it adds an extra layer of restriction to one of the Champions League's most recognisable match-ups.
Inter Milan and Arsenal face the same issue
Inter Milan and Arsenal are the other fixture pair affected by the same rule. They met in the 2024-25 season, when Inter Milan hosted Arsenal and won 1-0, and again in the 2025-26 season, when Inter Milan hosted Arsenal and lost 3-1.
That means the draw now has a built-in limit on where certain pairings can be played, even before the balls are picked out. It is a small detail in the regulation, but one that can shape the travel, the atmosphere and the balance of a major European tie.
For Liverpool, the issue is straightforward: Real Madrid can still be drawn again, but Anfield cannot be the venue for a third successive season. In a competition built on fine margins, that is the sort of rule that can quietly change one of the biggest fixtures in the Champions League.
