Delta Pilot IL Flight DL437 diverted from its Los Angeles to Boston trip on Tuesday after the captain told air traffic control he was ill and needed a hospital. The Boeing 757 made an emergency landing in Detroit, then continued to Boston after another crew boarded.
The flight carried 147 customers. It reached Boston about 90 minutes late, and Delta later said the captain was taken off the plane once it landed.

Former military and commercial pilot Matthew "Whiz" Buckley said the radio call fit standard cockpit practice. "In airliners, if you're not flying, you're the one doing the talking, because that allows, in this case, the first officer, to focus on just flying the airplane. So, yeah, that makes perfect sense as to why he's communicating," he said.
Buckley also said the crew handled the diversion properly. "They did this by the book, right? We talked through this. If any pilot is incapacitated or feeling incapacitated, like, 'Hey man, this is pretty bad,' you need to divert to the nearest suitable airfield," he said.
Detroit landing and delay
The captain’s own message on the air traffic recording was direct: "This is the captain. I am the one who is ill. Um, I am going to taxi the jet to the gate and then I need to go to the hospital," he said. That statement led to the diversion to Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport while the flight was still on Tuesday’s cross-country route.
After landing, another crew boarded the aircraft and the trip resumed to Boston. Delta said, "We apologize to our customers for this disruption in their travels."
