Walmart contactless payment rollout begins Aug. 24 at select Walmart stores and Sam’s Club locations, adding Tap to Pay to checkout options for customers and members. The change gives shoppers another way to pay at the register using eligible contactless cards, phones or smartwatches.

Walmart plans to make the option available at all Walmart stores and Sam’s Club locations in the U.S. by the end of 2026. The company also plans to expand Tap to Pay to its fuel stations by mid-2027.

Tap to Pay at checkout

For shoppers, the rollout means Tap to Pay will sit alongside payment methods already offered at checkout, including cash, credit card and Walmart Pay. Customers and members can also add eligible Walmart, Sam’s Club and OnePay cards to digital wallets.

That matters because the new option does not replace the methods already in place. It adds another path at checkout for people who already use a phone, smartwatch or contactless card.

Sam’s Club and Scan & Go

At Sam’s Club, members already have Scan & Go, which lets them scan and pay as they shop. Tap to Pay becomes another option in that same checkout setup, but it arrives through the rollout that starts on Aug. 24 rather than as a separate system.

The first wave is limited to select locations, so the practical question for many customers is simple: whether their store or club is in the opening group. Walmart has said only that the expansion starts at select U.S. locations.

Walmart fuel stations by mid-2027

Walmart’s wider plan pushes the payment option beyond the first stores and clubs. By the end of 2026, it is set to reach all Walmart stores and Sam’s Club locations in the U.S., then move to fuel stations by mid-2027.

For customers, the change is incremental but broad: the new contactless choice arrives first at checkout, then spreads across the chain’s U.S. locations, and later to fuel stations. The rollout timeline is the part to watch if a local store is not in the first wave.
