Scottie Scheffler’s bid for a fifth straight Player of the Year award is still very much alive, but this is not a one-man race. With the Tour Championship at East Lake being played this week live on Sky Sports, Rory McIlroy and Matt Fitzpatrick remain firmly in contention for the 2026 PGA Tour Player of the Year award.
The PGA Tour Player of the Year prize, also known as the Jack Nicklaus Award, is decided by a vote of PGA Tour members. Scheffler has dominated the award in each of the last four seasons, yet the 2026 race has been kept open by strong results from McIlroy and Fitzpatrick as the campaign reaches its final stages.
Scheffler’s case remains strong
Scheffler has done plenty to keep the conversation centered on him. He opened 2026 with victory at The American Express in January and added another win at the FedEx St. Jude Championship in August. In between, he also recorded five runner-up finishes on the PGA Tour, a level of consistency that has kept him right at the top of the discussion.
That sort of season is usually enough to settle an award race early. But this year has been different because other leading names have also built strong cases, and the final tournament at East Lake can still influence how members view the season as a whole.
McIlroy and Fitzpatrick keep the pressure on
McIlroy’s case is built on quality at the biggest events. He defended his Masters title in April, then added a tied-second finish at the Genesis Invitational, top-ten finishes at the PGA Championship and Genesis Scottish Open, and third place at the BMW Championship.
Fitzpatrick has also forced his way into the discussion. He won three PGA Tour events in 2026 and finished runner-up twice, giving him a season that matches Scheffler’s for headline impact even if the profile has been different.
McIlroy has said there is “all to play for” and no “no chance” about the award race, which is a fair reflection of where things stand. Scheffler may still be the benchmark, but the votes are unlikely to be straightforward if the Tour Championship changes the picture once more.
Why East Lake still matters
There is a clear reason the award has not been wrapped up yet. The Tour Championship remains the season’s final statement, and with members voting after the full body of work, one more strong week can still matter.
For Scheffler, the task is to finish like the player who has already owned this award for four straight years. For McIlroy and Fitzpatrick, the opportunity is to turn a fine season into a decisive argument. However the vote goes, the race has the feel of one of the most open Player of the Year contests in recent years.
