Rangers are close to signing Girona winger Minsu Kim for about €10 million, in a deal that would rank among the biggest in the club’s history if it is completed. The move would give Rangers a young attacker born in 2006, and there is already talk that he could be in line for a debut away at Aberdeen if the medical and paperwork are cleared.
The Athletic reported at 24th local time that Rangers are close to agreeing the move, with the Scottish club turning to Minsu Kim after initially targeting PSV Eindhoven winger Couhaib Driouech. The reported fee is significant in Rangers terms, and it underlines how much they see in a player who has already had a complicated rise through Girona’s system.
Why Rangers have moved now
Minsu Kim’s route has been shaped by circumstances as much as talent. He joined Girona’s youth team in summer 2022, made his debut for Girona B in October 2022, and then extended his contract through 2027 in August 2024. By October 2024, he had also made his La Liga debut as a substitute against Real Sociedad in Round 10 of the 2024-2025 season.
Even so, first-team opportunities at Girona were limited. The key issue was the La Liga restriction on registering non-EU players, which made regular involvement difficult. That context helps explain why a switch to Scotland has become such a realistic option.
What Rangers would be getting
The winger spent last July on loan at Andorra of La Liga 2, and last season he played 40 La Liga 2 matches there, scoring six goals and providing four assists. This season, he returned to Girona after relegation to the second division, but his long-term future now appears to be elsewhere.
For Rangers, the attraction is obvious. They are looking at a player with recent experience in Spain, a clear attacking output in La Liga 2, and enough room to keep developing. At 2006-born, he would also arrive with the sense that there is much more to come.
Local media have suggested that Kim Min-soo could make his Rangers debut away at Aberdeen on the 30th, provided the medical and administrative steps are completed. That would be a quick arrival in football terms, and it would immediately put the new signing under the kind of pressure that comes with playing for Rangers.
If the deal goes through, this would be more than a routine squad addition. It would be a statement signing for Rangers, both in financial terms and in the profile of the player they have chosen to back.
