Cambridge United have signed Cathal Heffernan from Harrogate Town on a four-year contract, adding a young central defender as their summer recruitment reaches seven new arrivals.
The 21-year-old arrives after a brief spell at Harrogate Town, where he made his first taste of senior football. For Cambridge United, the move brings in a player who has already spent time in some notable development environments before stepping into the senior game.
From Cork City to senior football
Before the summer of 2022, Heffernan was with Cork City and joined AC Milan on loan. That move later became permanent in the summer of 2022, and he went on to play at Under-18 and Under-19 level for the Italian club.
In August 2023, Heffernan moved from AC Milan to Newcastle United, where he captained the Under-21 side. After that, he joined Harrogate Town and took his first step into senior football over a six-month spell.
Why Cambridge United made the move
For Cambridge United, the signing adds depth and long-term planning to the squad. A four-year deal suggests the club sees Heffernan as more than a short-term option, especially given his age and his background in both academy and senior settings.
Heffernan said the move was an easy one to make once Cambridge United showed interest, explaining that his previous experiences had prepared him for this stage and that he is eager to get started.
