A double-decker bus crashed into a house on West Road in Ormesby St Margaret on the morning of the report, leaving the period property badly damaged but injuring no one. Norfolk Police said nobody was hurt in the collision, while West Road stayed closed as emergency crews worked at the scene.
Kevin Griffin on West Road
Kevin Griffin, a neighbour, said he saw the bus coming towards his house before the impact. “I was coming out of my front door of my house here, and I just glanced to my side, and then there was a bus coming towards my house.” He said: “Then I saw a big cloud of dust.”
Griffin also described the sound and what he did next. “It sounded like an explosion. It sounded like a bomb going off, and there was dust everywhere, and I just ran through my gate to my bus.” He added: “I got onto the bus, then I was helping people get off the bus. It was upsetting.”
Norfolk Police at 10.12am
Police were called to West Road at 10.12am after reports of a road incident. Firefighters from Great Yarmouth, Gorleston, Carrow and Dereham attended the scene, and it was understood there were seven or eight passengers on the bus when it crashed.
Ormesby St Margaret damage
The house was a period property that its owners had been renovating for the past six years. The crash significantly damaged it, left part of it collapsed and completely exposed the interior. Its owners were not in when the bus hit the house.
Tony Bushkes described the sound of the crash as “shocking”. West Road remained closed while emergency services continued the clear-up effort, and the immediate focus stayed on making the property safe and removing the wreckage from the road.
The unanswered question is what caused the double-decker bus to leave the road and hit the house.
