The Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club is bringing the season to a clear point of pressure: a 30-man field, a $10 million winner's share, and another chance for players to strengthen their case before Brandt Snedeker makes his six captain's choices for the Presidents Cup.
For Scottie Scheffler, this is also a chance to add a third victory of the season at East Lake. For others, including Jj Spaun, it is about finishing the year at the highest level and leaving the strongest possible impression before the next round of selection decisions arrives.
Why East Lake still matters
The PGA Tour's revamped postseason model is due to arrive for the 2028 season, but this year's Tour Championship is still being staged in Atlanta in the traditional setting. That keeps the focus on the title race, the FedEx Cup and the big-money reward at the end of the week.
There is also history attached to the venue. Tiger Woods managed five straight PGA Tour Player of the Year awards from 1999 to 2003, a reminder of how much a strong end-of-season run can shape a player's standing.
East Lake has already produced memorable recent results. Scheffler won the FedEx Cup there in 2024 with a 65, while Rory McIlroy made his ninth straight appearance at the course. Collin Morikawa finished runner-up in the Tour Championship and posted the low gross score of 22 under, not including starting strokes, and Henley tied for fourth after a final-round 9-under 62.
The Presidents Cup angle
There is more than one prize in play. Several players in the 30-man field are also trying to improve their position for the Presidents Cup roster, with Brandt Snedeker due to make his six captain's choices on Tuesday.
That adds another layer to the week. A strong performance at East Lake can change the tone around selection, especially with the Presidents Cup set for Sept. 24-27 at Medinah Country Club outside Chicago.
For Scheffler, the target is straightforward: keep winning and keep setting the standard. For Spaun and the rest of the field, the task is different but no less important. A good finish can still mean relevance, momentum and a better conversation when the roster is decided.
The Tour Championship may be the final event of the season, but for the players involved it is also a reminder that one week can still shape the next few months.
