Willie Peters has defended Hull KR's youth development approach ahead of Thursday's Super League clash with Wigan Warriors, saying criticism of the club's pathway work has come from people who are not seeing the full picture day to day.
Hull KR go into the match with a youthful lineup because of injuries and a crowded run of fixtures. In the four games across 14 days before Thursday, the club recorded two wins and two defeats, and Peters said the rotation challenge has only added to the pressure on selection.
Peters pushes back on outside criticism
On Wednesday, Peters said he did not value comments from people who, in his view, were not watching academy sessions or training. He said the coaching staff and pathways coaches communicate regularly, and that there is a process in place when teams are picked.
Peters also repeated that the youth system was an area he identified early in his Hull KR tenure. In the first couple of months after joining the club, he said the pathway needed work, and he has maintained that few youth players had come through to the first team over the years.
That remains the central issue for Hull KR. This year to date, the club has used 27 players, the competition-low, which has fed criticism over squad rotation and the depth available behind the first-choice group. Peters said the club is aware of the problem and is putting more resources into it.
Why the issue matters now
The immediate concern is the quality of the side Hull KR can field against Wigan Warriors, but the longer-term question is whether the club is building enough homegrown depth for the future. Peters said he learned at a previous club that players must be developed in the right way, and he stressed that the work has to continue even if the public debate is uncomfortable.
He also acknowledged the coaching reality. As he put it, a coach is "damned if you do and damned if you don't" when youth players are used early. If the team loses, the decision comes back on the staff; if youth is not played, questions remain about the pathway. Peters said the current situation only strengthens that point because Hull KR are now using youth out of necessity.
That makes Thursday's Super League clash with Wigan Warriors more than just another fixture. It is also another test of a system Peters has openly said needs strengthening, even as he prepares to leave Hull KR for PNG Chiefs at the end of the year. The long-term work on the youth pathway will continue after his departure, but the debate around it is very much live now.
