Rabindra Dhant is set for one of the biggest fights of his UFC path on Friday, when he meets New Zealand's Kasib Murdoch in Road to UFC. The matchup gives Dhant, one of Nepal's prominent MMA figures, a direct test against an undefeated opponent who brings wrestling, grappling and boxing into the cage.
Dhant enters with 11 professional MMA bouts, 10 wins and eight victories by knockout or technical knockout. Murdoch is 8-0, with five wins by KO/TKO, two by submission and one by judges' decision. That contrast makes the bout simple to read and difficult to win: Dhant has the more proven résumé, while Murdoch has not yet been beaten.
A major test for Dhant
For Dhant, the key question is whether his trademark power can carry over against an opponent who can compete in several phases of the fight. Fans know his signature strike as the Dhantshot, and Dhant leaned into that identity in a short UFC social media video on Thursday, saying, “My surname is Dhant,” and “And I hit the shot Dhantshot.”
The faceoff between Dhant and Murdoch on Thursday did not produce any pushes or banter, but the stakes were clear. This is the type of fight that can define whether a fighter continues advancing on the Road to UFC stage, especially when the opponent has yet to lose a professional MMA bout.
Coach Diwiz Piya said Dhant has been putting in the work. “Rabindra has been working tremendously—deep into training his body, mind and everything,” Piya said. He added, “He is prepared…It is him [Rabindra] who is going to show. So, we will wait for him to show rather than me talk too much.”
The fight also comes during a painful week back home. On Wednesday, flash floods devastated the Nepali community, leaving hundreds dead and many more missing. Piya said, “Our heart goes out to our country and people back home at this time of crisis,” and added, “We are here for a task and duty to represent. Lord knows we have cut no corners. We hope to make you all proud.”
That backdrop gives Friday's bout extra weight for Dhant and for Nepali fans following his run. The result will not only say something about his UFC hopes, but also about how far one of Nepal's leading MMA names can push his style against an unbeaten, well-rounded opponent.
