Transfers do not always say everything about a club, but this one says enough to matter. FC Utrecht have taken Sem van Duijn on loan from AZ for the rest of the season, added an option to buy, and given themselves a low-risk way to add a forward who has already spent time learning the game in different environments.
For Van Duijn, the move is another step in a career that has already taken a fairly unusual route. AZ signed the 22-year-old in 2024 on a three-year deal after his spell at KVV Quick Boys, then sent him to Jong AZ in the Keuken Kampioen Divisie for a year and a half. Over the past six months, he was on loan at Telstar in the VriendenLoterij Eredivisie, where he made 14 matches and scored five goals with two assists. Utrecht have described that journey as a special road to the top, and it is not hard to see why.
The most important part of the deal is the structure. Utrecht are not committing to a permanent transfer immediately, but they have secured the option to buy if Van Duijn fits what they need between now and the end of the season. That matters for a club looking for attacking help without taking on unnecessary long-term risk. It also gives Van Duijn a clear target: arrive, contribute, and make himself difficult to leave behind.
Van Duijn said he was happy to be there, pointing to the size of the club and the atmosphere around it. He also described himself as a player with intensity and stamina, which fits the sort of immediate impact Utrecht will want from a midseason addition. The timing helps too. As early as Sunday, he could debut when PSV visit De Galgenwaard, which would be a quick test of how ready he is to step into a bigger role.
Why this move makes sense for both sides
There is also a useful football logic behind the transfer. Utrecht get a forward who has recent Eredivisie experience and a record of contributing in attack, while AZ keep control of the longer-term picture. That balance is common in modern squad building, but it still only works if the player is ready to translate one loan into another level of responsibility. Van Duijn has already shown he can adapt at Telstar, and now the challenge is whether he can do the same at a club with higher expectations.
The move also sits within a wider AZ picture. Last year, AZ signed Matej Sin from Banik Ostrava for four million euros, but Sin did not force his way into the starting XI partly because of the presence of Sven Mijnans and Kees Smit. Sin will continue on loan at ADO Den Haag, with a medical still to be scheduled. None of that changes Van Duijn's immediate task, but it does underline how squad competition and loan pathways remain central to how AZ manage their players.
For Utrecht, though, the headline is simpler. They have added a forward on a short-term deal with a possible permanent future attached. If Van Duijn settles quickly, the option to buy could turn this into more than a seasonal stopover. If not, Utrecht still limit the risk. That is exactly the kind of transfer that can look modest on Friday and important by spring.
