Andrea Eastman died Wednesday in her sleep at her home in Santa Barbara at 86. The former ICM agent had spent decades shaping casting and representation around films that still define the business.
The Godfather and Goodbye, Columbus
In 2023, Eastman said, “You make endless lists when you are a casting director” and added, “When you do a movie, you try to think out of the box. For The Godfather, it was endless casting. We worked seven days a week. I was dreaming of Italians all night every night.” That sentence fits her career better than any resume line: she was inside the machinery that decides who gets seen and who gets remembered.
She fought to cast Ali MacGraw for Goodbye, Columbus in 1969 after Natalie Wood had turned down the part and the studio had looked at hundreds of other actresses. By 1972, she had initiated the casting for Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather with Fred Roos, and she thought Carlo Ponti would make a great Vito Corleone before Mario Puzo suggested Marlon Brando.
James Caan and Al Pacino
James Caan had excelled in his screen test for The Godfather, and Eastman later said, “We all worked as a team, but I am responsible for Jimmy Caan getting the part of Sonny,” She also hurriedly got him to sign a contract before someone changed their mind. Coppola told her, “Just cast my fucking movie!” as he left for Sicily to scout locations, and she got Charlie Bluhdorn and Robert Evans to sign off on James Caan as Sonny and Al Pacino as Michael.
That decision carried a real complication: James Caan was initially slated to play Michael Corleone, but Al Pacino was later hired for the role. Eastman was also part of the chain that brought Steven Spielberg and Roy Scheider together for Jaws in 1975, then talked Rob Reiner into hiring Billy Crystal for When Harry Met Sally... in 1989.
ICM, Paramount, and the roster
Before and after those film calls, Eastman worked as head of casting at Paramount Pictures and later as a manager and longtime ICM agent. She discovered Jaclyn Smith and represented or managed Barbra Streisand, Burt Reynolds, Peter Boyle, Chevy Chase, Henry Winkler, Jamie Lee Curtis, Christopher Reeve, Katharine Ross, Christopher Plummer, James Brolin, Dustin Hoffman, Dyan Cannon, Gabriel Byrne, Brenda Vaccaro, Richard Gere, Kim Basinger, Kathleen Turner, Stockard Channing, Tony Danza, Wes Craven, Katherine Heigl, Katie Couric, Elle MacPherson, Marshall Brickman and Charlie Rose.
Her death closes a career that touched Goodbye, Columbus, The Godfather, Jaws and When Harry Met Sally... through the casting choices that shaped all four. The only immediate unanswered point is what caused her death, and the record she left is clearer than that one missing detail.
