David Bailey gave the Jets one of the clearest rookie positives of Preseason Week 2, recording his first NFL sack midway through the first quarter in Pittsburgh. In a week when several young players were being asked to make a case for bigger roles, Bailey delivered a concrete one: production against live NFL competition.
The sack came against Will Howard during Friday night action, and it added to a useful first-half showing for the rookie pass rusher. Bailey worked against the Steelers' right tackles in the first half of the Jets' win in Pittsburgh, and the result was exactly what teams want to see in August: a young edge player affecting the game rather than simply taking part in it.
Bailey makes an early mark
This was not a massive sample size, but it did not need to be. Bailey had three reps across his first two series, and one of them was enough to leave a mark on the night. For a rookie edge defender, getting home for a first NFL sack is a clean early benchmark, especially in a preseason setting where the main task is to show that the speed and power can translate.
That is why the performance matters. Preseason football is often about flashes, and Bailey produced a meaningful one. The Jets did not need a long evaluation to see the upside on display in Pittsburgh.
Rookie movement elsewhere in Week 2
Bailey was not the only rookie-related storyline across the 2026 preseason. On Thursday night, Slaughter took over at center against the 49ers after Tyler Biadasz's season-ending knee injury changed the picture at the position. That is a very different sort of challenge, but it is the same kind of preseason pressure: adjust quickly, handle responsibility, and show you can be trusted.
On Friday night in Jacksonville, Freeling was expected to step into the starting right tackle spot because Taylor Moton was sidelined indefinitely after a blood clot in his lung created an opening. For rookies, that is often how opportunity arrives in the NFL — not in ideal circumstances, but in moments when the roster suddenly needs someone ready.
Across Week 2, that was the common thread. Some rookies were asked to react to injuries, others to prove they can handle a new role, and Bailey did the most obvious thing of all: he made a play that will be remembered because it was his first NFL sack. In a 16-game preseason calendar, those early markers matter.
