NC State’s trip to Virginia on Saturday is a rare kind of opener, and one that could have a real say in the ACC picture later in the season. For Dave Doeren, it is also another chance to show that a program with consistent win totals can take the next step.
The Wolfpack have won 48 games over the last six seasons, but they have not reached the ACC championship game under Doeren. That is why this opener matters beyond the usual first-game questions. It is NC State’s first season-opening ACC road game since 1974, and it comes against a Virginia team that reached the ACC title game in 2025.
Doeren wants more from NC State
Doeren has been clear about the level of ambition inside the program. This summer, he said: “We’re here to do more.”

Doeren enters his 14th season at NC State, making him the fourth-longest tenured coach in the Football Bowl Subdivision, and the expectation is no longer just to stay competitive. It is to contend.
Earlier this month, Boo Corrigan defended that record and pushed back on the idea that the program should be defined only by what it has not yet achieved. “Give the guy a break,” he said.
Corrigan also pointed to the standard Doeren has maintained. “We’re winning a lot of games and no one wants to win more than him. I can tell you that.... I can assure you, as disappointed as fans are when we lose a game, no one’s more disappointed than Dave Doeren. No one cares more about us being good than Dave Doeren. No one cares more about us doing things the right way than Dave Doeren.”
CJ Bailey gives NC State a base to build on
One reason NC State can approach this opener with confidence is the continuity at quarterback. CJ Bailey took over as the starter early in the 2024 season and has become a central figure in what the Wolfpack want to build.
Bailey also made it clear this summer that he had no interest in looking elsewhere. “Why would I go elsewhere to learn a new offense, build a new relationship with other people when I got a good home right now, right here?” he said.
That kind of buy-in matters. Bailey also said, “They’re going to prepare me for the next level. I’m ready to win with those guys.” For NC State, that is exactly the kind of quarterback mindset needed in a game that can set the tone for the season.
Why this opener matters
Virginia is not being treated like a routine Week 1 opponent. This is a veteran team that reached the ACC title game in 2025, and that makes the trip to Charlottesville even more significant for NC State.
The result will not decide the season, but it could shape the standings in a league where early losses can matter later. For Doeren, it is another chance to show that NC State’s steady progress can become something bigger. For Bailey, it is an early test of whether he can help turn a good home into a winning stage.
