Lozano was loaned from San Diego FC to the Los Angeles Galaxy earlier this month, giving the contest an extra layer of intrigue. The timing is notable because the Galaxy have only recently settled into life with Lozano. Greg Vanney pointed to the chaos of recent results while also stressing that the team needed more than just survival. “If you had said we took three red cards, but we managed to take four points (from three matches), you probably wouldn't bat an eye at that,” Vanney said. “But we're at that point, especially (at Montreal) by being up a goal, where the three points was the mission.”
San Diego FC arrives with a cleaner recent result. Last Saturday, it beat the Colorado Rapids 3-0 at home, a result that helped it move to 27 points. The Galaxy sit on 26 points, so the two sides are separated by just one point heading into Saturday’s meeting.
Lozano's return adds another layer
Lozano’s first matchup against his former club comes with some natural emotion, but the game is also about how both teams manage the moment on the field. Anders Dreyer said he had “a lot of good memories” with Lozano last season and added, “I have nothing bad to say at all.” He also called the matchup interesting and said he is looking forward to it.
For San Diego FC, Lozano’s departure leaves a noticeable gap in the attack. For the Galaxy, he represents another important piece in a stretch where the team is trying to stay in the playoff conversation while cleaning up the mistakes that have cost it points.
