Shane van Gisbergen has put himself in a position few would have predicted when the season began. Entering Saturday night’s Coke Zero Sugar 400, the Trackhouse Racing driver is 31 points ahead of Ryan Preece with one regular-season race left, giving him control of his Chase hopes heading into the final cutoff race.
The margin is notable because van Gisbergen is still relatively new to oval racing compared with most NASCAR Cup Series drivers. Even so, he has managed to stay above the cut line through the late-season stretch, and his points cushion now gives him some breathing room in a race that will decide the playoff field.
How van Gisbergen built the lead
Van Gisbergen’s current position traces back to his late-June win at Sonoma Raceway, which gave him his second victory of the 2026 season and left him 36 points above the cut line at the time. Since then, the regular season has moved through eight oval tracks, and the battle around the Chase cutoff has remained tight.
Speaking about the run, van Gisbergen said pride was a fair way to describe what the team has accomplished. He said Trackhouse Racing has really improved this year and noted that it has been encouraging to match teammates Ross Chastain and Connor Zilisch on ovals.
What he said about the stretch run
Van Gisbergen also pointed to a difficult outing after leaving the West Coast. He said the team had a painful San Diego race and felt it should have produced a 40-50 point day instead of a two-point day. Even with that setback, he said it has been really cool to keep the gap steady since Sonoma.
That is what makes the current NASCAR race standings so interesting. Conventional wisdom suggested van Gisbergen would have a harder time surviving in the playoff picture once the schedule moved deeper into oval-heavy territory. Instead, he enters the final regular-season race with a points advantage over Ryan Preece and a real chance to reach the Chase.
The remaining task is simple: finish the job in the Coke Zero Sugar 400. For van Gisbergen, the story is no longer just about whether he can compete on ovals. It is about whether he can turn that progress into a playoff berth.
