Newcastle United’s pursuit of Fernandez-Pardo is still alive, with the club encouraged enough to re-enter the race after previously viewing a move as unrealistic. Lille’s decision to remove the 21-year-old from first-team training has added fresh tension to the final four days of the transfer window, but the fee gap remains a major obstacle in any deal.
The latest move came after Newcastle submitted a final €60 million offer on Tuesday. That bid is still below Lille’s asking price, which leaves the clubs apart even as Newcastle continue to look for another significant signing before the deadline.
Why Newcastle are still pushing
According to Chris Waugh, Fernandez-Pardo remains the primary target, with Newcastle having been aggressive in pitching their project to the player. Waugh said they have since had enough encouragement that the athletic and adaptable winger-cum-forward would still be willing to join St. James’ Park, and that is why they have stepped back into the contest.
That matters because Newcastle had initially treated the deal as unrealistic after failing to qualify for European competition. The fact they are back in the race suggests there is still belief that the player’s willingness could help bridge part of the gap, even if the valuation remains difficult.
Lille tighten their stance
Davide Ancelotti confirmed on Thursday that Fernandez-Pardo would no longer train with Lille’s squad until the end of the transfer window. He also said he was focusing on the players available for tomorrow’s match and those training with the team.
That is a clear sign the situation has reached a more serious stage. When a player is removed from full training in the closing days of a window, it often points to a club preparing for all outcomes, including a possible sale.
Even so, the key issue is still the money. Newcastle’s latest offer stands at €60 million, while Lille’s valuation is higher, with figures in the discussion reaching €70 million. That is a significant difference, and it means any agreement will need either a new bid or movement from the French club.
