The deal is not dead, but it is not done either. And that is the frustrating truth for Hamburg and Arsenal over Fabio Vieira: the personal terms are already in place, yet the two clubs are still staring at the same problem this month, the fee.
Earlier this month, GGFN reported that Hamburg and Arsenal were preparing for another round of negotiations over the Portuguese playmaker, and that remains the status now. Hamburg are back at the table, Arsenal are not moving off their number, and the disagreement is still exactly where it was before. In transfer talk, that usually means one thing: both sides believe they have time to make the other blink.
That would be a dangerous assumption for Hamburg, because Vieira is not the only piece they need to fit into this deadline puzzle. Merlin Polzin still has a very obvious hole to address at right wing-back, where Bakery Jatta is currently the only established option after the departures of William Mikelbrencis and Giorgi Gocholeishvili. In other words, Hamburg are trying to solve one major problem while also chasing a player who could require a meaningful outlay of cash.
Vieira is the attractive part - the bill is the issue
There is no great mystery here. Hamburg already know what Vieira can offer after his excellent loan season at the Volksparkstadion last term, and that is precisely why they keep coming back. A creative midfielder who fits the team, understands the environment and has already shown he can deliver is exactly the sort of signing clubs are supposed to want. But wanting a player and agreeing the price are two very different things.
The same logic applies even more sharply when you look at Hamburg’s wider plans. Arthur would be an inexpensive short-term solution, while Zakaria El Ouahdi would be a permanent investment. And El Ouahdi is clearly not some lightweight option either: last season he registered eight goals and five assists in 34 league appearances, plus four more goals in nine Europa League outings. That is the sort of profile that makes sense for a club trying to strengthen properly, not just patch over a problem.
But permanent investments cost money, and that is where the Vieira situation becomes more complicated. Hamburg may need to finance both a move for Fabio Vieira and an expensive right-back signing, which is exactly the kind of balancing act that can turn one promising summer into a tense final week. The club have a clear idea of what they need. The question is whether they can pay for all of it without settling for compromise in the wrong places.
So yes, the talks continue, and yes, the player remains available to them in principle because the personal terms are already agreed. But until Hamburg and Arsenal settle the fee, this is still just a negotiation with teeth. Hamburg know Vieira is a useful upgrade. Arsenal know that too. And that is why the price is still the battleground.
