River Plate’s road to the Copa Libertadores 2027 is narrower now, and the margin for error is gone. After being eliminated from the Copa Sudamericana 2026 by Independiente Santa Fe in the round of 16 at the Monumental, the club has only two realistic ways back into South America’s top club competition.
One path is straightforward, if extremely difficult: win the Torneo Clausura 2026. The other is to finish in the top three of the Tabla Anual. Those are the only routes left after River Plate lost one of its main qualification options, since the Sudamericana champion gets a direct place in the Copa Libertadores.
Where River Plate stands now
The timing makes the situation even more uncomfortable. Before the next matchday, River Plate had 33 points in the Tabla Anual. That leaves it seven points behind the final Libertadores place, with only six teams qualifying through the annual table and 42 points sitting above the cutoff. The club is also trying to repair a poor run in the Torneo Clausura 2026, where it had only 4 points in 6 dates and had lost 4 consecutive matches.
In league terms, River Plate is not just chasing results. It is trying to stop its season from drifting further away from the standards usually expected in Núñez. Eduardo Coudet now has to manage both the immediate pressure of the Clausura and the longer qualifying picture at the same time.
The two routes left
The first route is the most direct: win the Torneo Clausura 2026 and secure a Libertadores place as champion. The second is more gradual but still demanding: climb into the top three of the Tabla Anual, where the annual qualification places are reserved alongside the Apertura and Clausura champions. Belgrano had already qualified after winning the Apertura, which reduces the room available for everyone else.
That means River Plate does not need a miracle, but it does need a sharp turnaround. It sits five points behind playoff qualification in its zone, and seven points behind the final Libertadores place in the annual standings. That is not impossible, but it is a long way from safe.
For now, the equation is simple. River Plate can still reach the Copa Libertadores 2027, but only by winning the Clausura or climbing into the top three of the Tabla Anual. After the Sudamericana exit, there are no easier routes left.
