The NFL never hands out sympathy points, and the Cardinals have made that perfectly clear by waiving QB Kedon Slovis. It is a blunt roster move, but it is also exactly the kind of move that tells you where a player stands in the league when the numbers get tight and the margins get cruel.
Slovis had already been through a proper tour of the league before this latest cut. Following the 2024 NFL Draft, he signed with the Colts as an undrafted free agent out of BYU, only to end up among Indianapolis' final roster cuts in 2024. From there he spent time on Houston's practice squad during the season, re-signed with the Texans on a futures deal this offseason, and was then waived by Houston at roster cutdown before landing with the Cardinals soon after.
That kind of movement does not scream stability. It screams survival.
A short stay in Arizona
For the Cardinals, this was not a case of cutting loose a player who had become central to anything. Slovis appeared in two games for Arizona in 2025, which is exactly the sort of workload that tells the story on its own. He was there, he got a look, and now the organization has decided to move on.
The on-field production was minimal. In those appearances, Slovis completed one of his two passes for -2 yards. That is not the kind of line that forces a team to rethink its depth chart or cling to upside. It is the kind of line that keeps the discussion very short.
What the move really says
This is not a dramatic indictment of one player so much as a reminder of how fast the quarterback market can turn. Slovis has now moved from the Colts to Houston and then to Arizona, with each stop offering only a brief chance to make himself stick. The Cardinals' waiver is simply the latest chapter in that sequence.
There may still be another opportunity somewhere else. In the NFL, there usually is for a quarterback with tools and a recent paper trail. But the uncomfortable truth is that every new stop gets harder when the previous one ended with so little proof of traction.
For now, the Cardinals have made their decision, and it is a clean one. QB Kedon Slovis is out, and Arizona is again resetting the room rather than waiting for something more to develop.
