JK Scott's difficult night in the Los Angeles Chargers' preseason finale has only strengthened the case that the team may need to move on. Against the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday night, Scott shanked a punt and finished with three punts for 33.7 yards per punt in a 20-18 loss.
That is the kind of performance that stands out even more for a team trying to compete for a championship. Punting is not usually the headline act, but field position matters in tight games, and the Chargers cannot afford repeated setbacks in an area that should be dependable.
Why Scott's role is under pressure
Scott has been with the Chargers since 2022, and there have been excellent punts along the way. The problem, though, is that those moments have been few and far between. The broader picture is what makes this such a live issue, because Thursday night did not look like an isolated bad moment so much as another reminder of inconsistency.
Earlier in the preseason, the Chargers also allowed an 83-yard punt return touchdown against the 49ers. After that play, Jim Harbaugh said Scott needed to have a plan for making the tackle in that situation. That comment underlined how closely the coaching staff is watching the special teams unit, and how little margin for error Scott appears to have.
The numbers do not help his case
Scott's 2025 punting numbers also tell the story of a player who has not yet settled into consistent form. He has 48 yards, 47.8 yards per punt, a 41.4-yard net average and 23 punts inside the 20-yard line. Those figures are not disastrous, but they do not erase the frustration created by the lower moments.
For the Chargers, the question is simple: can they trust Scott when the games matter most? A contender needs reliability in hidden areas, and punting is one of them. If the uneven performances continue, this is the sort of roster decision that may become unavoidable before long.
