Tom Iorpenda has completed a permanent move to Swansea City for an undisclosed fee, leaving Huddersfield Town after a route that began when he joined from Brighton and Hove Albion as a 16-year-old in 2021. The transfer ends his time at Huddersfield Town with 15 first-team appearances and follows a season-long loan at Notts County.
Huddersfield Town sporting director Chris Markham said the club had made several offers to keep him on a longer deal, but Huddersfield Town accepted Swansea City’s offer with future protection built into the arrangement. That leaves Swansea City with a 21-year-old midfielder whose last season included promotion via the League Two play-offs and two end-of-season awards at Notts County.
Huddersfield Town offers and exit
Markham said Huddersfield Town left Tom Iorpenda in no doubt about its wish to keep him long-term. He added that the club’s existing contract set to expire at the end of the current 2026/27 season meant the focus shifted quickly to securing the best deal possible for Huddersfield Town.
Chris Markham said: “Throughout discussions, both Tom and his representatives were left with no doubt about our desire for him to remain a Town player for the long-term.” He also said: “With his existing contract set to expire at the end of the current 2026/27 season, their lack of willingness to engage in those discussions meant that we immediately turned our focus to securing the best deal we could for the club to help us meet both our short- and mid-term aspirations.”
Notts County season-long loan
The move follows a season-long loan at Notts County last season, where Iorpenda helped the club earn promotion via the League Two play-offs. He also won both the players’ player of the year and fans’ player of the year awards, a sign that his form away from Huddersfield Town translated into a full season of responsibility rather than a brief loan cameo.
Markham said Huddersfield Town had already been “proactive in the transfer market” to limit the impact on squad depth, while staying alive to further possibilities. The practical effect for Huddersfield Town is immediate: one development pathway has closed, and the club now has to replace a midfielder who had been part of its longer-term planning.
Swansea City and future protection
Markham said Huddersfield Town “reluctantly” accepted Swansea City’s offer and that the deal was structured to protect the club in the future. He said: “Reluctantly, we have accepted a lucrative offer from Swansea City for Tom’s services, with the deal also structured to ensure that Huddersfield Town will be protected in the future.”
Martin Drury said Iorpenda had made clear his wish to move on to a higher level and that he had trained well and acted professionally during the last two months. Drury said: “I’m disappointed he has chosen to leave our club as I believe our environment would have been a perfect fit for him and his development as both a player and person.”
For Swansea City, the deal brings in a 21-year-old midfielder with first-team experience, a successful loan spell, and a record of being trusted and rewarded for it. Huddersfield Town now has to turn those protected terms into squad reinforcement, while Iorpenda starts the next stage of his career in Swansea City colours.
