Ruud Gullit has made a clear call on Chelsea's attacking potential, saying the answer to whether they have the Premier League's best front line is “yes”. For a side being talked about as one of Arsenal's closest challengers, that is a significant verdict from a former Chelsea player and manager who knows the standards at the club.
Chelsea have made an impressive start to the 2026-27 campaign, scoring nine goals across three outings in Premier League and Carabao Cup competition. With no European football on the schedule this season, the focus is squarely on domestic progress, and Gullit believes that gives the squad a real chance to make a sustained push.
Gullit: Chelsea's attack can decide the race
“The short answer is yes,” Gullit said when asked whether Chelsea could boast the Premier League's most dangerous attack.
He pointed to the quality and balance of the attacking group, naming Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers and Joao Pedro as the players who give Chelsea their edge. That is the heart of the argument for Chelsea: they now have more than one source of threat, and the side looks capable of hurting opponents in different ways.
Gullit also tied the discussion to the wider structure around the team. “You can see the potential of Chelsea, but it's more about the collective philosophy of Alonso,” he said. In other words, the quality is there, but the system has to allow it to breathe.
Why Palmer remains the key figure
Cole Palmer remains central to that conversation. He scored 25 goals in his debut campaign at the Bridge, but the 2025-26 campaign was a more difficult one, and he also missed out on England's World Cup squad. That backdrop makes Gullit's praise more striking, because it suggests Chelsea still see Palmer as the player around whom the attack is built.
Gullit said he could see “a very strong midfield with Cole Palmer having a kind of freedom without Enzo Fernandez,” describing that as “a bit of a controversial call” for now. It is a useful reminder that Chelsea's best attacking version may not simply be about stacking talent on the pitch, but about giving the right players the right space.
At one stage last year, there was talk of Palmer moving to Manchester United, which only underlines how much his stock has risen. He has already delivered major honours at Chelsea too, with Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup success adding to his reputation.
Strong squad, but some selection questions remain
Gullit was not entirely uncritical, and that made his view feel even more measured. He said he still had “some doubt” about bringing in Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson in terms of the mentoring they wanted in the system, but his overall verdict was still emphatic.
“I do believe Chelsea have a strong side, a very strong side,” he said. “So yes, I believe there is a strong, strong squad.”
That is the key point for Chelsea supporters. The goals are flowing early, the attack looks well stocked, and the club's domestic-only schedule means there is a real opportunity to turn promise into pressure on Arsenal. The next question is whether Chelsea can sustain that level when the season gets heavier and the tactical tests become harder.
For Gullit, though, the starting point is already clear: Chelsea have the firepower to be taken seriously.
