On paper, that looks like a mismatch. The Dodgers are not simply filling innings here. They are trying to preserve structure, keep options open and avoid forcing a larger problem later in the month.

The Cardinals also have a reason to treat this opener with some edge. In the teams’ first series this season, played May 1-3, St. Louis took two of three games from the Dodgers. That does not mean September starts with a statement game baked in, but it does give the opener a familiar tension: one team trying to prove the earlier result was no accident, the other trying to show the first meeting no longer defines the matchup.
