Chelsea have agreed a Deadline Day loan deal to send Shumaira Mheuka to Celtic after the 18-year-old striker underwent a medical on Tuesday. The move gives Mheuka his first spell away from west London and sends him into senior football with the Scottish Premiership champions for the rest of the 2026/27 campaign.
Mheuka had only recently committed his long-term future to Chelsea by signing a new contract that runs until the summer of 2033. That made the loan a notable next step rather than a sign of separation, with Chelsea still viewing him as a player for the future.
Why Celtic moved now
Celtic were in need of attacking cover, with Kasper Hogh and Callum Osmand both dealing with injuries when they moved for Mheuka. The timing also mattered, with Tuesday night’s 11pm BST summer transfer deadline approaching and clubs looking to complete business before the window closed.
The Scottish side are coming off another successful domestic season, having won their 14th title in the last 15 years on the final day in May. Even so, they have had a difficult start to the European campaign, dropping into the Europa League league phase last week after losing to LASK Linz in the Champions League play-off round despite holding a four-goal aggregate lead at one stage before a 2-1 loss.
What Mheuka brings
Mheuka arrived at Chelsea’s academy from Brighton in 2022 and has already been around the first team, making his debut under Enzo Maresca in December 2024. He has also picked up nine senior appearances and won the Premier League 2 Player of the Season award last term, underlining why Chelsea were willing to secure his future on a long deal before sending him out on loan.
This is a practical move for all sides. Celtic get a young striker with senior experience and clear upside, while Mheuka gets a chance to build on his early progress in a more demanding first-team environment. For Chelsea, the loan offers a chance for him to develop away from Stamford Bridge while still remaining part of their long-term plans.
The next question is how quickly Mheuka can adapt to the demands of the Scottish Premiership and whether he can turn this first loan spell into regular senior minutes. If he settles quickly, Celtic will have added a useful attacking option for the rest of the campaign.
