Mike Dean referee has sparked fresh debate over officiating standards after admitting he used to play secret games during Premier League matches, including trying to go 20 to 25 minutes without blowing a whistle.
The former Premier League official, who spent a 22-year career in charge of 553 top-flight matches, made the comments on Jamie Vardy's Having a Party podcast. Dean, who was once described as the most recognisable official in the country, said the antics were his way of joking around during games.
What Dean admitted
Dean said there were matches where he and others would kick off and see how long they could go without blowing the whistle. He said he had done it a few times in the Premier League before VAR, adding that he once managed 20 to 25 minutes without stopping play.
He also revealed another game he used to play in matches: staying in the centre circle for as long as possible. Dean said he once lasted about 15 minutes without leaving the centre circle, describing it as a joke with the linesmen on the touchline.
Why the reaction has been so strong
The comments immediately prompted outrage from football supporters on social media. Some questioned why officials would laugh about that kind of behaviour, while others said it was disrespectful to fans who expect matches to be refereed professionally.
One fan wrote: “Why are they laughing at this?” Another said: “It’s disgusting from a supposed top referee. Messing around while fans pay hundreds of pounds for matches to be officiated professionally.”
Others raised wider concerns about what else may have gone on behind the scenes, while one supporter said: “More scrutiny, more pressure. Astonishing really.”
Dean's legacy under fresh scrutiny
Dean's long career and his reputation for controversy meant he was already a familiar figure to Premier League supporters. He was also previously known for his self-admitted arrogance, which added to the sense that his comments would divide opinion.
That is the heart of the issue here. Referees are under constant scrutiny already, and revelations like this only increase the pressure on those working at the top level now.
Dean has already stepped away from refereeing, and ended his role as a video assistant referee in 2023, 12 months after retiring from on-field officiating. But these latest remarks ensure his name remains part of the conversation around how the Premier League has been officiated, and how seriously supporters expect that job to be taken.
