Luka Modrić has left the door open to a future return to Real Madrid, but only after he has finished playing, insisting that Madrid still feels like home to him.
The Milan midfielder was speaking in an interview with AS and framed his present and future in simple terms: he is happy in Italy, he still feels connected to Madrid, and retirement is not something he is in a hurry to force if he continues to feel content and able to do what is required of him.
Modrić, who is 41, said he does not see age as the decisive factor. For him, the real question is whether he still feels good enough to keep playing, and his answer was clear enough to suggest that the end is still on his own terms.
Madrid remains the reference point
The most striking part of Modrić’s remarks is not that he enjoys life at Milan. It is that Real Madrid still sits at the centre of his football world. He described Madrid as “the greatest team in history” and made clear that his connection to the club has not faded since leaving.
That is a significant line from a player who spent 30 years building a career that now includes 24+ seasons at the top level. It also fits the wider picture of a man who has never fully detached himself from the club where he won so much and defined an era.
Modrić also revealed that when he and Carlo Ancelotti were in Madrid, they would sometimes talk about Milan. And when Ancelotti learned that Modrić would not be continuing with Madrid, he called him. It is another small reminder of how strong those ties remain.

For now, though, Modrić sounded settled in Italy. He said he feels very happy with his life in Milan, that he was welcomed warmly by the club and the fans from day one, and that he enjoys the city even if it is different from Madrid.
He also placed Milan in its proper historical context, describing it as a great club and the second most European title-winning team after Real Madrid. It was a respectful nod to both sides of his football life: the present and the past.

That is a striking endorsement from a former teammate and rival who has seen the standards required at the top for more than 30 years. It also underlines Modrić’s own view of age in football: quality, discipline and motivation still matter more than a number on a birth certificate.
In that sense, his answer about retirement was perhaps the most revealing of all. Modrić said there is a common idea that once players reach a certain age they should step aside, but he does not see it that way as long as he still feels content. For him, this is his life.
