Delaware begin their 2026 season against Merrimack on Sept. 3 at 7 p.m. at Delaware Stadium, and the storyline is already clear: Nick Minicucci arrives with preseason recognition, but the quarterback himself is making it plain that none of that counts for much yet.
That is a useful mindset for a season opener. Delaware are trying to start fast, but the bigger picture around this team is whether Minicucci can turn last year’s production into something even more meaningful, and whether Ryan Carty’s side can back it up when the games begin to matter.
Minicucci was direct about how he views the preseason attention.
“I don't accept any of those because it's preseason,” he said. “Why do I care about something I haven't earned yet?”
He added that the praise is not something he plans to carry into the season, saying it is “outside noise” and asking, “What is that going to do for me on Thursday?”
That is exactly the tone Delaware will want from their starting quarterback. The Blue Hens do not need a player distracted by individual recognition. They need the one who threw for at least 3,500 yards and ran for 10 touchdowns last year, while helping a team that threw 540 passes to operate with real volume and confidence.
Minicucci's focus is on the bigger prize
The most revealing part of Minicucci’s comments was not the rejection of preseason honours, but the destination he keeps pointing toward.
“I really want to win a conference championship,” he said. “I don't really care about personal accolades. I've never really been that way. I'm not a selfish guy.”
That is the right message at the right time. Quarterbacks at this level are often measured by numbers, but Minicucci is framing his season around something more important: whether Delaware can win together and keep building toward a title run.
“I really care about just the team, and I want us to win and win together,” he said. “A Conference USA championship here at Delaware would mean the world to me.”
Why Carty trusts the direction
Ryan Carty has reason to believe Minicucci will keep pushing. Carty said, “Nick's done a really nice job,” and added, “He's always asking for more.”
That matters because the best quarterbacks are rarely satisfied, especially in seasons that begin with expectation already attached. Carty went even further, saying, “There's never a day that goes by that he's going to rest and say ‘I made it. I’m good.’ It's always something that's driving him.”
For Delaware, that drive is the point. The opener against Merrimack is not about settling a debate over preseason honours. It is about establishing a tone for the year ahead and showing that the quarterback leading the offense is focused on the next step, not the last one.
If Minicucci carries that same attitude into the season, Delaware should feel confident about their starting point. The real test now is whether the Blue Hens can turn the early promise into results once the schedule begins to tighten and the stakes rise.
