WTAE reported Friday storms that flooded roads, cut power, and disrupted school and game plans across Western Pennsylvania. In Bethel Park, a tent moved across the football field before it hit the goal post, and a Joey Fabus Foundation charity football game between Bethel Park and Moon Area was later canceled.
Keegan Mahaney, the owner of Compact Cars of Pittsburgh, said flooding along Saw Mill Run Blvd left his lot underwater. “I couldn't even get down to their lot because it was already flooded that deep. In my lot it was waist high, and I was just focused on my cars at that time.”
Bethel Park School District note
Bethel Park School District sent a note to families about severe weather damage in the community and widespread power outages at several schools. The superintendent said the district would make a determination about school on Friday around 5 a.m., keeping the final schedule tied to the storm’s overnight impact.
The district’s timing left families with two different outcomes in motion at once: the football game was already off the board, but the school day still depended on the early-morning review. That split reflected the broader disruption across roads, power service, and school property.
Roads in Pittsburgh
Floodwaters swept up a car on Northumberland Street between Forbes Avenue and Squirrel Hill near the Bob O'Connor Golf Course. Giant ponds of water also covered the roads at Valmont Street and Aylesboro Avenue in Squirrel Hill, while North Highland Avenue was shut down near Stanton Avenue because of a large tree down with a power line along with it.
Another large tree lay in the middle of Bates Street between Second Avenue and the Boulevard of the Allies in South Oakland, and several Pittsburgh Regional Transit buses were not able to get through. Those blockages left transit service, local traffic, and nearby businesses dealing with the same storm system at the same time.
McKeesport Area School District
McKeesport Area School District said Friday would be an Asynchronous Flexible Instruction Day after storm damage and power outages. For families trying to plan the morning, that meant the district had already moved away from a normal in-person schedule while Bethel Park was still waiting on its early decision.
The storm’s path left a clear split in response: one district moved to remote instruction, one district delayed its call until around 5 a.m., and roads from Squirrel Hill to South Oakland were still dealing with water, trees, and blocked buses.
