The Office of the Inspector General released a report Thursday saying Lori Chavez-Deremer violated Labor Department policy, including by taking subordinates to an Oregon strip club in April 2025. The report said she had already resigned in April, before the findings were made public.
The report said a preponderance of the evidence substantiated multiple violations of DOL policy and listed four other areas where she broke protocol. It also said four Chavez-Deremer subordinates, including Brian Sloan, were involved in policy violations.
Oregon strip club visit
According to the report, Chavez-Deremer took subordinates, including her bodyman, to the Oregon strip club during April 2025. It said she gave money from her purse to a driver and directed him to give it to a performer, then asked an agent to drop bills one by one onto a partially nude woman.
The report said the agent complied against his wishes. It also quoted the report as saying he was told to follow Chavez-Deremer’s instructions after he hesitated and sought intervention from Brian Sloan.
Brian Sloan relationship
The report said Chavez-Deremer “developed and maintained an inappropriately close and unprofessional relationship with [Sloan] while he exercised supervisory and operational authority over her protective detail that was inconsistent with federal impartiality and preferential-treatment standards.” It said Sloan exercised supervisory and operational authority over her protective detail.
It added that there was not sufficient evidence “to establish that Chavez-Deremer and [Sloan] engaged in a romantic or sexual relationship,” even as it said their conduct violated workplace standards. The report also said Sloan instructed a security agent to comply with Chavez-Deremer’s requests during the Oregon trip.
Las Vegas and Michigan
The report said electronic hotel door lock records from two Las Vegas trips “appeared to indicate” Chavez-Deremer and Sloan spent at least portions overnight in the other’s room. It also said a witness saw Chavez-Deremer massaging Sloan’s shoulders while seated behind him in a vehicle during a trip to Michigan.
Another witness reported hearing Sloan make a comment interpreted as sexual innuendo during that Michigan trip. The report said those findings joined the strip club visit and other conduct in a broader pattern that included combining personal and official travel in a manner inconsistent with DOL policy, possessing and consuming alcohol on federal property without proper authorization, directing government employees to perform personal tasks using official time and resources, and failing to report gifts through required channels.
The report leaves the practical question on consequences open for Chavez-Deremer and the subordinates named in it. For now, the record is the finding itself: the IG said the conduct violated policy, but the report does not add a disciplinary step.
