Jim Thornton Game Show Suspension: Sony Recasts Wheel of Fortune Role

Jim Thornton game show suspension has put Wheel of Fortune’s announcer seat in flux just as Season 44 approaches. Sony Pictures Television said it had suspended Thornton and was recasting the role while it conducts a thorough investigation.

That leaves the syndicated show airing reruns ahead of the Monday, Sept. 14 premiere of Season 44, with the announcer position now treated as an open business decision rather than a fixed part of the rollout. Thornton has been with Wheel of Fortune since 2010, and his work on Celebrity Wheel of Fortune from 2021 gave him a second on-air lane.

May 14 Flight Complaint

A complaint made on a flight in May sits at the center of the timeline. American Airlines said that on May 14 American Airlines Flight 1276 was met by law enforcement upon arrival at Los Angeles International Airport following concerns reported by a customer onboard.

That sequence matters because it places the trigger for the internal review before Sony’s Sept. 1 decision. Thornton’s lawyer said law enforcement spoke to him for five minutes or less, immediately determined that no wrongdoing had occurred and told him he was free to go.

Sony Moves on Sept. 1

On Sept. 1, Sony Pictures Television said, “We have recently been made aware of allegations concerning Jim Thornton.” The company added, “He has been suspended from Wheel of Fortune and we are recasting while we conduct a thorough investigation.”

For viewers, that means the show is not simply waiting out the dispute; it is actively replacing the voice tied to the program’s daily structure while the review runs. Thornton officially became the replacement for Charlie O'Donnell in 2011, after O'Donnell had spent more than 25 years at the mic and died in November 2010.

Lawyer Pushes Back

On Sept. 2, Thornton’s lawyer drew a hard line between allegation and charge, saying, “My client did not engage in any illegal conduct, was not arrested, and has not been charged with any crime.” The lawyer also said, “When questioned about the complaint made by a fellow passenger on the flight, law enforcement spoke to him for five minutes or less, immediately determined that no wrongdoing had occurred and told my client he was free to go.”

That leaves Sony’s suspension and recasting decision in direct conflict with Thornton’s account of a brief stop, no arrest, and no criminal charge. The public record now turns on the result of the investigation, and the practical effect is already visible: Wheel of Fortune is moving into Season 44 with its announcer role temporarily recast rather than settled.
