Fantasy Premier League managers have a simple question in Gameweek 3: is this the right time to use the Triple Captain chip on Erling Haaland?
The Manchester City forward scored twice at Crystal Palace in Gameweek 2 and delivered 13 points, underlining why he remains the standout premium option. He is now owned by 71.6 per cent of managers, which says plenty about how many teams already view him as the safest big-hitter in the game.
Haaland’s appeal is easy to understand. He posted 10 shots, including nine shots in the box, and Manchester City now return home to face Coventry City on Saturday 5 September. On paper, that is exactly the kind of fixture that can tempt managers into a chip decision this early in the season.
Why Gameweek 3 is tempting
The Triple Captain chip is a one-time decision, so timing matters. A home match against a team from a lower level looks attractive, and City’s Gameweek 3 meeting with Coventry City stands out as the most obvious chance for a big Haaland return.
There is also the broader fixture picture to consider. Manchester City have three home matches against promoted clubs in the first half of the 2026/27 season, which means managers are not short of opportunities if they choose to wait. Haaland is also in a stretch where his minutes and output could be affected later by a tighter schedule, especially with European competition beginning on Tuesday 8 September against FC Porto in the UEFA Champions League.
The case for waiting
Patience has its own logic. City’s schedule becomes busier, and Pep Guardiola’s rotation policy is always a reminder that no premium asset is completely safe from a rest day. That matters if you are looking for maximum certainty from a chip that cannot be recovered once used.
Manchester City’s next major league dates also provide future options, including Ipswich at home in Gameweek 7 and another home run later in the campaign. So, is Gameweek 3 the best time to Triple Captain Haaland? It may well be the most straightforward early chance, but not the only one. The fixture is attractive, the form is strong and the ownership is massive. Still, managers willing to hold the chip have a case to wait for another home fixture later in the season, when the schedule and rotation risk may line up differently.
For now, Haaland is the clear headline choice in FPL tips debates. The real decision is whether to back the safest premium option immediately, or save the chip for a later week when Manchester City’s home schedule offers another chance to strike.
