Hugo Valenti journey moved from guest spot to lead voice in Tokyo on Tuesday night, when Journey brought him onstage for a second show in Japan and had him sing "Keep on Runnin'." The move put a tribute-band frontman into the center of a set that already rotated five lead singers.

Journey in Tokyo

Valenti had already sung "Faithfully" on Saturday night in Fukuoaka before repeating the guest appearance in Tokyo. In the second Japan show, he handled the Escape deep cut while Arnel Pineda, Deen Castronovo, Jonathan Cain and Jason Derlatka also took lead duties at different points.

That arrangement is unusual because Valenti fronts Hugo: The Ultimate Journey Tribute, not Journey itself. Booking him again gave the Tokyo audience a direct comparison between a tribute act frontman and the band’s own rotating vocal setup, and it put a deep cut in front of a crowd that had already seen him once days earlier.

Steve Perry comparison

Valenti has said, "I once auditioned to take Perry's place in Journey," and that he was told "he looked too much like the famous singer." That history explains why his appearances carry a different charge from a normal guest feature: the connection is not just musical, it is tied to a long-running comparison with Steve Perry.

Neither Journey nor Valenti has said anything publicly about future collaborations, so the Japan dates read as a contained experiment rather than a new standing role. After three Labor Day weekend shows in Honolulu, the band’s final fall run begins on September 12 in Los Angeles, and The Final Frontier tour ends on November 28 in San Francisco.
