For USF football, the first answer to those questions comes on Saturday, Sept. 5, when the Bulls host FIU at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa at 7 p.m.
The matchup matters because it arrives at the start of a new chapter for both teams. South Florida enters 2026 with Brian Hartline as its new head coach after Alex Golesh left for Auburn, while FIU is trying to build on a seven-win campaign in Willie Simmons' first season. That gives this opener a little more texture than a typical nonconference game. It is not just a season opener. It is an early read on two programs trying to establish new identities.
What the game says about both teams
FIU's 2025 season showed clear progress. The Panthers finished with a seven-win campaign, went undefeated in November, earned bowl eligibility for the first time since 2019 and beat Florida Atlantic in the Shula Bowl for the first time since 2016. They also won at Western Kentucky and Middle Tennessee for the first time in over a decade and posted their first-ever four-game win streak in Conference USA play. That is not the profile of a team merely hoping to survive. It is a program that has already shown it can carry momentum into the new year.
South Florida, though, has its own case to make. The Bulls finished 9-4 under Golesh in 2025, and Hartline now takes over with the challenge of keeping that standard intact while shaping the roster and style around his own approach. In the first game of the season, the details matter as much as the result: how quickly the Bulls settle in, how cleanly they execute and whether the new coaching era looks organized from the start.
A familiar meeting with new stakes
There is history here, too. The last time these programs met, on Sept. 20, 2008, USF defeated FIU 17-8. A lot has changed since then, but the basic idea remains the same: this is a game that can tell us something real about both sides before conference play starts to shape the season.
For FIU, the opener is a chance to show that last year was not a one-off spike. For South Florida, it is a chance to prove that a strong 2025 can carry over even with a new head coach. Early September games do not decide seasons, but they can frame them. This one should do exactly that.
