Temple football plans to open the 2026 season with Ajani Sheppard and Jaxon Smolik both in the mix at quarterback when it hosts Rhode Island on Saturday at Lincoln Financial Field.
K.C. Keeler said the two passers have both taken noticeable steps forward and that Temple believes it can live with a two-quarterback approach if needed. He said one of them will start the game, but the team is still sorting out how the job will be handled beyond that.
“The quarterback play was just OK. Now, all of a sudden, they’ve both made dramatic improvements,” Keeler said. “I think we feel like we can live with two quarterbacks. I’m going to ask one of those guys to go out there and start the game, obviously.”
That is a meaningful development for a Temple team trying to build on Keeler’s first season. The Owls came within one win of bowl eligibility in 2025, then entered this year with a revamped roster and higher expectations. The opener against Rhode Island is the first step in a nonconference schedule that should give Temple a better sense of where it stands in September.
Why the quarterback situation matters
Temple spent much of last season searching for stability at the position. Keeler said the staff had a similar feeling then, with no clear answer early in the year before someone eventually separated from the pack. This time, he said the two quarterbacks have improved enough that the staff is more comfortable letting the competition play itself out on game day.
The situation also includes Sam Brown, who was limited in practice over the past two weeks and did not participate in team or contact drills after taking a hard hit on Aug. 20. Keeler said Temple is trying to protect Brown “from Sam” because he works so hard, and that the goal is to have him fresh for Saturday. “If we had a game today, he’d be playing,” Keeler said.
Brown’s health is part of the broader context around Temple’s offense, which has dealt with turnover and injuries in recent seasons. Brown suffered injuries at Rutgers in 2022 and again in 2024, while Ajani Sheppard missed the entire 2025 season at Washington State because of an injury.
That background helps explain why Temple is being cautious this week. The Owls know the opener will not settle every question, but it should offer an early look at how the quarterback room fits together and whether the team is ready for the tougher stretch ahead.
For Temple, the message is simple: the competition is not over, the depth chart is still moving, and the first answer will come on Saturday afternoon.
