Ram is moving ahead with a full-size RAM SUV, the Ramcharger, to challenge the Chevrolet Tahoe, Suburban, Ford Expedition and Expedition Max. The three-row model is expected to be built in Warren, Michigan, in the same plant that builds Ram 1500s and Jeep Grand Wagoneers.
The plan gives Ram a direct entry into a segment long controlled by Chevrolet, Ford, GMC, Cadillac and Lincoln. For buyers comparing large family SUVs, it puts a Ram-branded option into the same conversation as Tahoe, Suburban and Expedition shoppers.
Ramcharger and REV
The Ramcharger name has moved before. Ram originally used it on a short-wheelbase Chevy K5 Blazer competitor with a removable roof, then expected the name to return on the extended-range version of the electric Ram 1500 before that model was renamed REV. Now the badge is attached to a full-size SUV instead.
That naming shift matters because it shows how Ram is repurposing an old name for a new job. The new Ramcharger is described as a repatriated version of the Ram body-on-frame-derived Jeep Grand Wagoneer, but it is being aimed more squarely at the Tahoe, Suburban and Expedition set than at Ram’s earlier electric pickup plans.
Warren, Michigan production
Warren, Michigan, is the production base for the Ramcharger. Building it alongside Ram 1500s and Jeep Grand Wagoneers places the SUV on hardware that Stellantis has already adapted across different products.
The DT platform began life as the fifth-generation Ram pickup. It originally used a standard coil-sprung live-axle rear suspension, and later revisions for Jeep duty added an independent rear suspension. That history gives Ram a route to a full-size SUV without starting from scratch.
TRX and Hellcat V-8
Ram is also pointing the top model toward performance territory. A version of the TRX supercharged Hellcat powerplant will almost assuredly power the top SRT model, and that version is being set up as Stellantis’ foil for the Cadillac Escalade V.
The likely trim spread is broader than just the flagship. Ramcharger can use Express and Big Horn for entry-level pricing, while Laramie, Limited and Tungsten are intended to cover GMC and Denali territory. The Ramcharger Tungsten would also overlap with Jeep Grand Wagoneer trim levels that target Lincoln Navigator and Cadillac Escalade buyers.
Jeep Grand Wagoneer overlap
That overlap is the complication in the story. Jeep has so far declined to make any Wagoneer or Grand Wagoneer model Trail Rated, even though a Ramcharger Rebel or RHO can be fitted with Quadra-Lift air suspension, an electronic limited-slip differential, a low-range transfer case, Selec-Terrain modes and skidplates.
Those hardware choices would let the Ramcharger Rebel or RHO go after the Chevy Tahoe Z71 and Ford Expedition Tremor without waiting for Jeep to put a similar badge on Wagoneer or Grand Wagoneer. For buyers, the practical result is a new full-size Ram SUV that arrives with a clear rival set and a high-performance version already mapped out, even before Ram sets a launch date.
