Stein pointed to winter, spring and summer work, plus plenty of practice opportunities, as the foundation for Minchey’s first start. The message was clear enough: Kentucky has prepared for this, and Minchey has done it in practice. Now he needs to do it when the lights come on.

There was also a telling line from Stein that says plenty about Minchey’s edge. He said he loved Minchey’s intensity and likes him when he gets a little angry. That matters because first starts can easily turn into survival acts. Kentucky does not appear to want that. Stein wants energy, conviction and control. He wants the quarterback to take the easy money and run the show.
That is a reasonable demand, but it also tells you something about how the staff views Minchey. This is not about asking him to be a hero. It is about asking him to be composed enough to manage the game and aggressive enough to make it his own.
