Southern Miss has settled its quarterback competition for the 2026 season opener, naming Ethan Hampton the starter for the Sept. 5 game against Alcorn State.

Pete Thamel reported the decision on Sept. 4, giving the Golden Eagles clarity before their home opener at Renasant Stadium in Hattiesburg. The game is scheduled for 4 p.m. CT.

Hampton had been in a three-player battle with Landry Lyddy and John White throughout the offseason. Of the three, Hampton had the most starting experience, which likely gave him an edge once the competition moved into the final week before kickoff.

The timing matters because Hampton had also dealt with a bone bruise in his hand during Southern Miss's first scrimmage of the offseason on Aug. 15. He returned to practice on Aug. 31, which was a strong sign he was trending toward being available for the opener.

What Hampton brings to the job

Hampton is a 6-foot-3, 230-pound quarterback who has already shown he can produce when given the chance. In 2025, he threw for 1,600 yards, 12 touchdowns and six interceptions across two games. Lyddy started one game last season, while White remained part of the offseason competition as Southern Miss evaluated its options.

For Southern Miss, the move ends the uncertainty at the most important position on the field and lets the staff focus on getting ready for Alcorn State. For Hampton, it is another chance to establish himself as the clear leader of the offense and carry that momentum into the rest of the season.
