Louisiana Tech will open its 2026 season on Saturday night by hosting Northwestern State, and head coach Sonny Cumbie says the Bulldogs are approaching the matchup with the same intensity they would bring to any opponent.
The game also marks Louisiana Tech’s first season in the Sun Belt Conference, adding another layer to a matchup that is already drawing attention because of the spread. Louisiana Tech is 44.5-point favorites, but Cumbie said the number does not change the way his team prepares.
What Cumbie wants his team to understand
Cumbie pointed to Northwestern State’s most recent outing as a reminder that college football can swing on a few key plays. Northwestern State lost to Louisiana Christian 42-37 last week, but Cumbie noted that the Demons still produced 525 yards of offense and turned the ball over twice.
He also said the final score did not fully reflect how the game unfolded. In his view, it could have been 40-7 at halftime for Northwestern State and was not, which is why he stressed the importance of players understanding how narrow the margin can be.
That message fits a season opener. Teams are still learning what they have, and the first game often comes down to execution, discipline and which side handles early pressure better.
Why the opener matters
Louisiana Tech enters the season with some recent program success behind it, while Northwestern State is trying to stop a long slide. The Demons have not had a season over.500 since 2008, and they were winless since Aug. 26, 2025 before last week’s result. That history makes Saturday night look lopsided on paper, but Cumbie is treating it as a game that still has to be played.
“I don’t think our guys are going to view ourselves as underdogs or favorites because the most important thing that matters is these guys in here and the most important thing we do is practice to make sure we have a great week of preparation, that we have a great week of execution on Saturday. That’s what this game rewards,” Cumbie said.
He added that football does not reward forecasting or relying on past results. Instead, he said, it rewards hard work, execution and preparation, no matter who is on the other sideline.
For Louisiana Tech, that is the right message for a season opener and for a program beginning a new chapter in the Sun Belt Conference. For Northwestern State, it is another chance to show it can compete despite the recent results. Either way, Saturday night will offer the first real read on where both teams stand to start the 2026 season.
