The No. 19 Bulldogs beat No. 16 Augustana 30-23 on September 3, 2026, but the final score tells only part of the story. The final 3:24 did not arrive until nearly one and a half hours after a severe weather delay, which turned an already tense contest into a strange late-night test of composure.
And credit where it is due: the Bulldogs did not blink. They absorbed an early 7-0 hole, watched Augustana push in front 14-0, and still found enough answers to stay alive in a game that never really settled down. That is what a ranked team is supposed to do at home — not just play well when everything is tidy, but stay standing when the night gets weird.
A ranked game that kept shifting
Augustana struck first on its opening drive, and later in the first quarter Braylon Blount answered in emphatic fashion with a 57-yard touchdown run to get UMD moving. Drew Henson added a 39-yard field goal at the start of the second quarter, but the Bulldogs still trailed 17-10 at halftime. In other words, this was never a night where UMD could coast on ranking or home-field advantage. It had to fight for every inch.
The fourth quarter brought the sort of moments that decide these games. Jacob Eggert finished a goal-line touchdown, though UMD missed the extra point, and the Bulldogs were still staring at a narrow margin until late in the game. Then Derrick Johnson helped drive the Bulldogs downfield and another Jacob Eggert touchdown gave UMD the lead. That was the decisive swing, even if the weather delay made the final act feel like a separate chapter.
The delay matters because it changes the rhythm of everything. Players cool down, momentum disappears, and the last few plays become less about flow and more about nerve. Curt Wiese said he was proud of his players and appreciated Augustana and coach Olszewski for returning to finish the game. That was the right tone.
