Tim Plough's first game as UC Davis head coach in San Diego will carry a little more meaning than the usual early-season road trip.
The Aggies are scheduled to play at San Diego on Saturday evening, and for Plough it is a return to familiar ground. He grew up in the San Diego area, attended Ramona High School and has talked about the trip as a homecoming of sorts because so many family members and friends remain nearby.
Plough's connection to UC Davis also runs deep. He took a football scholarship there in 2004 and became a four-year letterwinner at quarterback from 2004-07. Now he gets his first chance to coach a game in San Diego with the Aggies, a place where his personal history and professional life overlap.
A familiar series with a few memorable chapters
UC Davis has seen this matchup before. The teams first met in 2006, when UC Davis won the initial game against a Jim Harbaugh-coached San Diego team. Plough's lone loss in the series came in 2008, a 28-20 decision, and UC Davis also beat San Diego 38-35 in San Diego in 2019.
That history helps explain why Plough expects another competitive game. He said there have been close games in the series that came down to the wire, and this one arrives with UC Davis carrying momentum from a 31-24 win at Portland State on August 29, 2026.
The result will still matter most, but the setting gives the game extra weight for Plough. He said he is from San Diego, described it as a beautiful place and joked that he tries to stay there for short stints because if he stays too long he starts wondering why he ever left.
Plough also left no doubt about the personal incentive. He said he hopes UC Davis can win and that he can celebrate afterward with a California burrito.
For UC Davis, it is a standard road game on the schedule. For Plough, it is a chance to coach in front of the people and places that helped shape him.
