Apple may split the iPhone 18 fold rollout, with the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the foldable iPhone unveiled in September while the base iPhone 18 waits until spring 2027. Buyers of the lineup would not all face the same calendar, and that changes when some people can get the premium models Apple appears ready to prioritize.
Tim Cook and September costs
Tim Cook said during a recent earnings call, “For September, we expect to pay even higher memory costs.”
That comes after Apple already raised prices across several major product lines in June, while iPhone pricing stayed steady and helped drive iPhone 17 sales during the last quarter.
The pressure point is straightforward. Apple may keep prices flat in the near term even as memory gets more expensive, and that makes a split release schedule easier to read as a margin decision rather than a simple product refresh.
iPhone 18 Pro in September
Apple hosts its Surprise and shine event on Sept. 9, and John Ternus will introduce himself to Apple fans that day.
The iPhone 18 Pro could keep a 6.3-inch screen size, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max could keep a 6.9-inch screen size.
The front design could also change. The Dynamic Island could be reduced by 35% on the iPhone 18 Pro, and Ice Universe says the Face ID sensor’s illuminator could move to one corner below the screen, which would free space at the top of the display without making the cutout disappear.
Base iPhone 18 in spring 2027
Sonny Dickson and Instant Digital said Apple could use cherry red and light blue color options, while Fixed Focus Digital backed dark cherry, sky blue, and dark gray and said light gray or white/silver was highly unlikely.
Ice Universe expects the iPhone 18 Pro Max to be 0.25mm thicker and 7 grams heavier.
The clearest practical question now is whether Apple will actually hold the base iPhone 18, iPhone Air 2, and iPhone 18e for spring 2027, because that would leave buyers choosing between a September flagship window and a much later lower-cost option.
Apple Sets September iPhone 18 Event With New Iphone 18 Foldable points to that same split calendar, but Apple has not said whether the rumored lineup shift will stick.
